On Kwajalein Atoll a military commission on Christmas day sentenced Rear Adm. Shigamatsu Sakaibara to hang for war crimes. His executive officer Lt Comdr Soichi Tachibana was also condemned for the Wake Island mass executions on October 7 1943 of 98 Pan American Airways civilian employees.
North Carolina Democrat Rep. Joe W. Ervin, 44, was found dead in his Washington home Christmas Day. Coroner ruled death by self-inflicted gas asphyxiation after a note to aide Theron L. Caudle and two other notes were found. Ervin had recently been released from hospital and had health issues following a fall. He served in the House after being elected last year from North Carolina's 10th district and resided in Charlotte since 1925.
The coast guard joined air sea rescue units from Charleston and two boats from Oak Island in the search for the two masted schooner Valmore missing since yesterday with a crew of four aboard. The Valmore is owned by Frank Cohen of New York City and was being towed to New Smyrna Beach by the 80 ton shrimp boat Dunworkin, piloted by Capt J E Howland of Moorehead City. The Dunworkin washed ashore wrecked yesterday afternoon at Wrightsville Beach after casting the schooner adrift.
Philadelphia dispatch reports Old St George's Church a landmark of American Methodism damaged by fire last night. Dedicated in 1769 and among the oldest Methodist churches, it faced about $5000 in damage. It hosted the first three conferences of American Methodism in 1773 74 and 75.
