U N troops repelled a major Chinese assault on T bone Hill near Seoul with very heavy Red losses after a four hour battle. U N air power then pounded Communist supply depots at Wonsan, delivering 250 tons of bombs on 255 buildings across 345 acres.

White Christmas Reserved for Some Regions

A Christmas outlook shows snow in the Southwest from Oklahoma to New Mexico and into the Texas Panhandle with four inches in Guymon Oklahoma and snow extending to Hutchinson Kansas. Light snow also fell in Colorado and southeast Wyoming while the Midwest and East faced mixed clouds, light showers, and mild to cool temperatures ahead of Christmas.

Pilgrims Thankful After Liner Grounding Off Beirut

Survivors from the 12,646-ton French liner Ampollion bound for the Holy Land say they are grateful for deliverance after the vessel ran aground near Beirut. Of 318 aboard, 27 died, nearly 70 injured, as harbor pilot Capt. Radwan Balpayj aided rescue in four trips. a 12-year-old boy died when his boat capsized.

Sylvania Workers Win 5 Percent Retroactive Pay Boost

About 775 employees at Sylvania Electric Products Inc cabinet plant receive a five percent wage and salary increase approved by the Wage Stabilization Board retroactive to September 11. The retroactive pay appears in today’s envelopes as the plant closes for weekend, with production slated to resume Monday, December 23.

Death of Tillet Ruled Self-Inflicted By Coroner

Charles W. Tillet a 64 year old Charlotte attorney and world government scholar died after an eight story fall from the Law Building. Mecklenburg County coroner Dr W M Summerville ruled the death as self inflicted. Tillet was a UNC graduate state Democratic leader and former UNC trustee who helped lead international law work with the American Bar Association. Services set for Friday at Myers Park Presbyterian Church with burial at Evergreen.

Governor Receives 1953 Ford As Christmas Gift

Gov Scott will depart Raleigh next month and ride in a two tone tan 1953 Ford provided as a Christmas gift from anonymous friends. The presentation occurred yesterday behind the State Capitol in brief ceremonies. The donors were not identified but are believed to be high state officials. the private secretary said they wish no obligation.

New Cafeteria at Raleigh To Be Operated By Alex Parker

Raleigh restaurantman Alex Parker will run the cafeteria in the new State Highway building. Director Charles M. Williams of the State Division of Purchase and Contract closed the deal yesterday. Parker will pay the State $400 a month or 4 percent of gross receipts, after offering $300 a month which was rejected by the State Board of Awards.

Couple killed as car crashes through open drawbridge

In Belhaven Hyde County a 40 year old man James Whitaker and his 30 year old wife Doris perished when their car plunged 20 feet into Wilkinson Creek after speeding past an open drawbridge. Police blamed excessive speed for inability to stop at the railing.

Body of music teacher Dorothy Parham recovered near Oxford

Funeral services were held today for Dorothy Parham 48 a music teacher after her body was recovered from a farm pond near Oxford Coroner F Farle Hunt reported she had been despondent for a month No inquest would be held Parham was a former organist at local Methodist and Baptist churches

Better Service for Aged Raleigh

A state committee on aging presented to Gov. Scott a report with 10 recommendations. Appointed after a Raleigh conference, the group notes persons 65 or older rose 50 percent in 12 years from 156 540 in 1940 to 235 000 in 1952.
