CANBERRA December 24. The 938-ton corvette Armidale sunk by Japanese bombers about 250 miles northwest of Darwin in early December. Two officers and 38 men were killed. 43 crew members were rescued after spending days at sea in lifeboats. Before sinking the Armidale destroyed one enemy bomber.
