CAPTURE OF HANGCHOW CHANGCHOW December 24 Japanese tonight announced Hangchow the rich Chinese seaport and capital of Chekiang Province was captured today by troops entering all the gates. There was no immediate word on fighting but indications were the city capitulated to avoid bombing and street fighting. The six Americans in Hangchow were believed safe. Earlier tonight Japanese reported encircling units within five miles of Hangchow and Chinese defenders cut off. Three hundred Americans were ready to leave Tsingtao on three American war ships if attacked.
