C L Schifferdecker, an American with a German sounding name, describes the thrill and anxiety aboard the Porto Rico Line steamer San Juan as French cruiser Descartes searches for potential prisoners of war. He recalls being questioned about naturalization and passports while two German passengers are taken off and one carries an umbrella with money left behind.
