Violence in Algeria intensifies as France pledges about 60 000 additional troops to quell the insurgency amid independentist attacks. Officials report heavy fighting near the Djurdura Mountains and Kabylie, with rebels and French forces suffering casualties.
Former State Insurance Commissioner Waldo C. Cheek said he will not run for governor but believes Hodges can be beaten if he seeks re election. He predicted Dr. Henry Jordan or Terry Sanford or Sen. W. Kerr Scott's 1934 campaing manager will announce an opposition bid in the coming days. Cheek, a Charlotte insurance executive since 1953, said he would support either man and urged a decisive race entering campaigning.
A government report states the Army will send more missiles to Western Europe in the first four months of the new year. The weapons include nuclear capable rockets with ranges around 70 miles, supplementing existing atomic stockpiles in the ground forces.

Chester Merrifield a 37 year old Louisville gunman died in the electric chair after fainting as he was strapped in for execution for the 1953 killing of Policeman Alvin Keown. He walked to the chair on crutches following a nightclub parking lot gunfight and made no statement in the death house.

Georgetown South Carolina four persons are feared drowned after a Waccamaw River boating accident yesterday afternoon. A tugboat crew spotted a capsized small boat near Beacon No 67 and conducted a search with sheriff's deputies. Identified victims are Johnny Cologne 15 Robb Elliott 15 both of Sandy Island and Dolly J Nelson 7 and gey Nelson 6 both of Pawleys Island. Investigations continue to determine cause and subsequent details.
Atlanta Governor Marvin Griffin and Attorney General Eugene Cook say city public golf courses admitting Negro players are a local matter and the state cannot intervene. Griffin insists racial mixing is a grave peril to harmony and predicts more such outcomes in communities controlled by white majorities.
The city’s golf courses will open to Negro players following a federal court order after a four year fight. Lead plaintiff Dr H M Holmes, aged 1, with sons Alfred and Oliver Holmes and real estate man C T Bell, plan to tee off at noon at Bobby Jones course. Mayor Hartsfield said the city will comply and course manager D Couch promised courtesy to the players.
