Markets opened mixed as indices hovered near record highs with gains led by tech shares. Traders cited stronger economic data and cautious optimism ahead of upcoming earnings season while bonds rose on cautious sentiment.
Forecasts show mostly fair conditions in the Carolinas with a cold tonight and Tuesday. Lows fall to mid 20s in the mountains and upper 20s to mid 30s elsewhere, with warmer coastal readings near 50s to 60s and a colder spell Wednesday.
At its annual meeting Henley Paper Co named N Todd Praigg Jr treasurer succeeding Arch D Grant who retired. Novi Peyton N Shaner Jr elected vice president printing papers and succeeds E Reese Felis as manager printing papers in the High Point division. Ray T Richards named sales manager printing papers in the Charlotte division succeeding Shaner. Henley’s Charlotte division moved into a new Texland Industrial Park warehouse of 5700 sq ft office space and over a million cu ft storage. The Gastonia division also moved into a new warehouse with half a million cu ft of office and storage space.
Dr Fortney Jamestown physician and community leader named to Perpetual board by Ed Mendenhall chairman Fortney a native of Sylvania Georgia graduate of Emory University interned at Emory practicing internal medicine in Jamestown for 18 years He is on the staff of High Point Memorial Hospital and was Chief of Staff there in 1967.
Thomson & McKinnon Inc. acquires assets of J. W. Sparks & Co., a 69 year old New York investment firm. Sparks offices in New York City and Philadelphia become part of Thomson & McKinnon effective immediately.
Indian Head Hosiery promotes Jane H. Theek to vice president of manufacturing and names C. Russell Kenneily executive vice president. Fred Wiley becomes senior vice president manufacturing administration, effective to oversee raw materials procurement, process development, and expansion projects. Wiley, 53, long with Indian Head. resides in High Point. Also Chicago plans O Hare Plaza a $45 million six building complex near O Hare Airport with a two lane expressway. Connecticut General Life Insurance and Seay & Thomas handle development.
An AP report from Nha Trang describes a South Vietnamese DC-8 crashing off the end of the runway near Cam Ranh Bay. Sixty three passengers and seven crew were aboard. 30 killed, 20-21 injured, and several believed trapped in rubble near a school and slum homes. American soldiers in a Jeep were among those hurt.
The father of poet Allen Ginsberg scolded his son after a speech to about 1,000 at Temple Eternal in Templa ternal. The elder described Allen as the guru of the flower generation and urged against drug legalization during the confrontation.
In Brunswick Georgia AP attorneys plan to call final witnesses in the murder trial of Charlotte NC executive Charles P Howser known as Phil Howser. He denied harming Carolyn Fraley Hogan at a Jekyll Island motel on Aug 17. A maid testified Hogan drank heavily and a medical examiner noted lethal blood alcohol.
Governor Bob Scott says food including milk is very reasonably priced in the United States and that North Carolina housewives get a good buy on milk. He praises the state Milk Commission for market stability while critics blame it for high milk prices. He notes tobacco will remain a major income and cites interest in low nicotine research.
Washington AP report on Strom Thurmond and his wife describing their first year of marriage. The 67 year old segregationist senator and Mrs Strom Thurmond recount meeting at York South Carolina during a grape festival where she was Miss South Carolina 1968.
