The Associated Press reports record low temperatures across North Carolina with Mt. Mitchell at 15 below zero and Asheville, Greensboro, and Charlotte tying or breaking records. Forecasters warn the cold will persist three more days with only slight warmups by Christmas Day.
President Eisenhower names Labor Secretary James P. Mitchell to head a 15 member commission to study the railroads and operating unions over work rules and featherbedding. The panel includes four other public members and was created on recommendations from railroads and five railroad unions.
A massive cold snap blankets the nation from the eastern Rockies to the Atlantic seaboard. Death toll rises to at least 55 as subzero readings hit Ohio and Indiana, with bitter winds and snow across the Great Lakes and Midwest.
A fire destroyed the old wing of Williford Elementary School near Rocky Mount North Carolina with about 85 500 in damage. Fire Marshal Perry O Berry suspects a gas explosion from a pipe under the kitchen area but the fire is under investigation. Fire units from eight volunteer departments and the Rocky Mount fire department fought the blaze all night. Rudolph Davis of Sharpsburg Volunteer Fire Department was hospitalized after being overcome by smoke. The school, built in the 1920s, had an appraisal of 223 900 with 85 500 for the old wing, all insured.
The aircraft carrier Valley Forge rescued 13 men from the stricken tanker Pine Ridge, with Captain Clarence A. Melvin hoping to recover the remaining survivors before sunset. Rescued crew include Elbert Freeman Patrick Dillon Leward Johnson Thomas Wynne and Oscar A. Edmunds, among others.
Gov. Hodges named Herbert Klotz of Washington as his liaison with the Commerce Department as he prepares to shift to the Kennedy administration. He declined to discuss other personnel moves or details, praising current officials for smoothing the transition.
Canadian Air Marshal Roy Slemon led the alert that a North American missile attack warning on Oct 5 was a false alarm. He ordered rapid verification after radar data from Thule Greenland suggested launches, preventing a possible nuclear disaster.
The Bolivia NC crash of a National Airlines DC 6B on January 6 killed all 34 aboard including Julian Frank a Westport CT lawyer. Investigations cited a bomb aboard the plane and Frank's financial dealings as notable factors in 1960 North Carolina coverage.
Coleta Burns an 11 year old from Viola Arkansas writes to the New York Police Department asking if Santa is real and if he might visit her family she lists gifts she hopes to receive and says Santa must be dead if he does not come. The letter was forwarded to the Police Athletic League and deputy commissioner Walter Arm replies that Santa is real but busy and may have overlooked them.
FBI director J Edgar Hoover said the Communist party USA is finalizing plans for a Chicago conference beginning December 31 to form a new national youth organization. He noted strong ties with the Soviet Union and Cuba and said the group will be clandestinely directed by party members. The FBI also cited a new publication New Horizons for Youth and referenced past West Coast student demonstrations at a House Un American Activities Committee hearing.
Tape records from FAA show United Airlines Flight 826 off course before collision with TWA Flight 266 over Staten Island. La Guardia controllers failed to locate the DC8 in Idlewild's pattern and questioned the fast moving jet’s destination and potential collision.
In Woodstock Illinois an 18 year old Richard Fournier cut down an eight foot evergreen from Woodstock City Park to give a friend a Christmas tree. Police say he admitted the act after hearing a sad story about a friend's family. He was charged with malicious mischief and faces up to 500 dollars fine and a year in jail. His case was set for a justice of the peace hearing on December 30.
