Fog Shrouds European Waters Amid Multiple Ship Collisions
Fog enshrouds the North and Baltic seas as ships creep toward harbor or anchor. The U S liner George Washington was rammed by the Danish vessel Malaya near Hamburg, causing a hole in the stern while the Malaya's bow was crushed. The Malaya risked sinking until her captain separated from the American ship and beaching occurred. The Hopatcong was struck in Istanbul Roads, while the British Rio Azul damaged the U S ship. Additional collisions occurred near Lisbon and Rotterdam, with losses including the trawler Patria and the William Hallett grounding near Ballycotton. Weather falIing, windless, and thick fog persist across western Europe.
