The Labor Department reported November consumer prices up three tenths of a percent, the same as October, while real take home pay rose eight tenths. Over 12 months, prices rose 5 percent, the smallest in over three years, with food and mortgage costs easing and auto rebates noted.
Chicago mayor Richard J. Daley died at 74 from a heart attack after a routine checkup. Bodyguards cried as aldermen began planning for leadership, with acting mayor possible from Council president pro tem Wilson Frost. Daley lay in state at Nativity of Our Lord Church as Mass was planned, with a future election to follow within six months.
A Liberian tanker Argo Merchant split in heavy seas near Nantucket. The Coast Guard said 50 to 75 percent of its 7.6 million gallon cargo of heavy oil spilled into the Atlantic as oil flowed from the wreckage.
