Santa Claus, Ind. Postmark Boom Driven by Stamp Collectors
Santa Claus Ind. rose to postal prominence due to stamp collectors sending millions of letters and unique postmarks. In 1932 the Santa Claus post office boosted its status, upgrading to third class and handling vast mail volume. Postmaster James F. Martin, a Republican, preserved the tradition by canceling a Christmas Day cover for President Franklin D. Roosevelt with the Santa Claus postmark.
