Gold Fish Found In Lake Erie Reach Port Clinton
Port Clinton Ohio December reports describe a surge of gold fish in the Portage River and nearby Lake Erie area. Fishermen note thousands of fish of the carp family, yellow gold and red tints, some reaching several inches, sent alive to New York markets while local trade remains minimal. Charles Klingbeil of United States Hatcheries suggests these fish escaped from Belle Isle and Detroit aquariums during the 1913 floods and multiplied over seven years in shallow waters. The fish migrate between marshes in summer and deeper Portage waters in winter.
