Paris AP The U S delegation warned North Vietnam that any attack on Saigon would jeopardize talks to end the Vietnam war. An American official said no threats were directed at Hanoi on resuming bombing of the North as Hanoi and Washington traded rival proposals. The first private session since Friday ended without progress as two deputy chiefs failed to bridge procedural disputes. Johnson ordered a halt to bombing on Nov 1 as part of a package to widen peace talks, but terms remain unsettled. Vance cited old American propositions on conference table and speaker order.
Norman Thomas, six time Socialist presidential candidate and lifelong public conscience advocate, died today at Hilaire Farm Nursing Home Huntington after a stroke. He recently moved from Huntington Hospital where hospitalized a year earlier. He ran against every president from Hoover to Truman and peaked in 1932 with 900000 votes, influencing FDR's policy considerations.
