Totem Poles Carved by Union Hill Principal During Alaska Year
Enterprise reports that Union Hill Elementary's new library displays eight carved totem poles and a brown bear, created by principal C. W. Howell in 1948 49 while teaching at Kake on Baranof Island Alaska. Howell used poles as teaching aids for fourth and fifth graders, noting Alaska native history reflects in the carvings. He and his family joined the Kake assignment, describing village life, winter fishing, and travel by boat or air. The project inspired Howell’s thesis on Alaska curricula and native life.
