A. T. Baird, Ashe County exemption board member, was attacked by Tom Burgess a resident who had been granted exemption. Burgess fired several shots before being overpowered and jailed. Rufus Shannon and his wife Mattie Shannon and William Waddell alias Wirtmore Weddell were arrested by secret service operatives in Columbia on counterfeiting charges. Mattie Shannon and Waddell are jailed. Shannon hospitalized after a streetcar accident. Metals dies molds and sandpaper for making counterfeit nickels and dollars were found at the Shannons’ residence.
Rock Hill on December 19 reports a rare bitter spell as the Catawba river freezes solid from Saturday to Monday. Ice spans the stream due to floating floes jamming the railroad trestle, though it is thin enough not to skate. Residents recall no prior freeze since 1880.
