North Carolina launches battle against adult illiteracy

Raleigh AP reports North Carolina becomes the first state to attack adult illiteracy under the war on poverty. The program, funded by the Economic Opportunity Act, will be run by the Department of Community Colleges through the division of adult education and community services. It offers free basic education to adults 18 or older with less than an eighth grade education, with classes up to 30 hours weekly and capped at 15 students per class. The initiative cites a 1960 census showing over 900,000 adults over 25 unable to understand eighth grade materials.
