A string of deadly fires leaves 22 dead including 11 to 16 year olds. Edna Lopez finds three children dead in New York City after a Christmas moment of danger. Ed ward Holder dies in a burning apartment as his mother returns. Other fatalities occur in Hopkinsville Kentucky Ottawa Ontario Norfolk Virginia Beaumont Texas and Beau mont nursing home.
Harvey Bailey, infamous for a 1932 Fort Scott bank robbery and a 1933 Oklahoma City kidnapping, is seeking parole after 22 years in prison. Kansas City attorney Joseph M. Miniace says he represents Bailey, who was involved in the Kansas prison break and linked to the murder of Frank Nash during the mob era gunfight.
The Democratic Party tools out a “ten top issues for 1956” list from the Democratic Digest based on a poll of party leaders. It cites farm income, tax favoritism for the rich, the public dole, big business favoritism, government misconduct, rising living costs, small business failures, GOP anti labor policy, the school crisis, and monopolies. Senate GOP leader Knowland criticizes Eisenhower’s administration and hints at anti China UN admission conditions amid a looming 1956 presidential contest.

President Jose Maza’s plan to back a two thirds ballot to assign seats stalls as delegates debate and light concerns about Geneva talks delaying formal close. Dr Ed Poteat a Baptist minister and author died at Rex Hospital from a coronary. He was pastor at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church and had recently arrived to officiate a wedding.
