Raleigh grocer and woman found dead back of store

Raleigh December 18 two deaths reported in Wake county as coroner L M Waring investigates what appears to be a double murder scene behind a neighborhood grocery. P N Mozingo 52 and Ina Collins were found dead in a bed room of the store building with signs pointing to violence and self inflicted gunshots.

U S Gunboat Erie Fired Upon By Spanish Cruiser Espana

A Reuters dispatch from Gijon reports the Spanish Fascist cruiser Espana fired three 305 millimeter shells within 300 yards of the U S gunboat Erie off Gijon. The Erie hoisted the American flag and later entered Gijon as the cruiser departed. The naval attache in Paris could not confirm the incident. The Erie, built under the 1933 program, displaces 2 000 tons, carries four 5 inch guns, two 3 inch AA guns, two 6 pounders, and a seaplane. It can make 20 knots.

South Carolina Rhodes Scholar Hopeful Faces House Feud

Peter R. Moody of Colooma NC a Wofford senior was challenged by South Carolina lawmakers who called his mill life sketch distortive and mental. A state psychiatrist was requested but a second resolution dropped the matter. Moody will compete in Atlanta for a Southeast Rhodes scholarship alongside William H. Grimball Jr. of College of Charleston.

Smoak to Face Four New Murder Poison Charges

Sheriff Jones to seek indictment of Edgar Leroy Smoak on three murder by poison charges and one attempted murder charge. The 39 year old boilermaker and his housekeeper Genette Harker are in New Hanover county jail after the death of Smoak’s 15 year old daughter Annie Thelma from poison. The officer says Smoak also poisoned his two wives and attempted to kill Mrs. Bertha Stuart, with death certificates citing convulsions in all cases. Harker not suspected in the other deaths. Insurance beneficiaries include Smoak on the daughter and wives and Mrs. Stuart.

Pickpocket Returns Papers In Odd Letter Case

A pickpocket who returns private papers after stealing them is revealed in Winston-Salem. Auto salesman Jack Lasley reported theft of his pocketbook and received a letter the next day returning all contents except the cash, with the typed note You can have the rest, thanks for the money.

Five Die In Gotham Rooming-House Fire

A dawn blaze in a West 73rd Street four story brownstone killed five occupants. August Frank 43 jumped to his death to escape the flames. Fire started in William Hoffman’s third floor rear room. Hoffman survived. Elinor Duffield 32 and her son Henry Jr. Nancy Green 25 and sister Margaret a bookkeeper also perished. Ann Collins in the basement alerted neighbors before dying. Firemen say Hoffman suspected smoking caused the fire. Chester Morash notified authorities nearby.

Press Association seeks weekday primaries change

The North Carolina Press association urged a special Democratic party committee to ask the legislature to move primaries from Saturday to Tuesday. Holt McPherson of High Point attended the session and spoke on the proposal.

Hamilton Voted $25,000 Yearly For G. O. P. Job

Chicago December 8 Members of the enbtainee committee of the Republican national committee disclosed that Chairman John Hamilton was voted a salary of 25 000 a year to devote his full time to the party revival It was the first time the chairman of the national committee had been put on a full time salary basis in the interim between presidential campaigns The action came at a meeting of the executive committee after the national committee gave Hamilton a vote of confidence and refused to accept his resignation.

Resolution on voting hours and party headquarters plan

The resolutions committee presented a measure passed last summer to reduce polling hours by closing earlier than sunset. Appointed by State Chairman J. Wallace Winborne, the committee was to review election law revisions including absentee voting and to study establishing a full-time party headquarters. No action was taken this afternoon.

New York, Dec 18. Initial payments of bonuses and dividends boosted consumer buying power over the past week, expanding trade across nearly all lines. Dun and Bradstreet reports a surge in Christmas shopping unmatched since 1929, with durable goods leading in schedules while wholesalers faced reorders due to limited merchandise. Retail distribution rose 5 to 15 percent from the prior week and 15 to 30 percent above the 1935 level in major regions including New England, the East, and the Northwest. Toys and sports items reached a seven year peak as luxury goods and apparel saw rising demand. Shortage of standard lines pushed promotions of piece goods, and linens and handkerchiefs sold rapidly.

Roosevelt to Discuss Navy Battleship Plans for 1937

Washington December 17 President Roosevelt said he would discuss with his cabinet whether two battleships should be laid down next year. The issue follows the expiration of the Washington and London treaties and indicates renewed naval building as a priority alongside aircraft and auxiliary vessels. Great Britain has funds set for two new battleships after January 1.
