Hippo Congo Resists Lure in Central Park Zoo

In New York on December 18 Congo the baby hippopotamus shows devotion to his mother Mrs Murphy. Head keeper Bill Snyder cannot tempt Congo with food or toys. Despite attempts, Congo remains outside the tank and refuses to be lured in as keepers ponder next steps.

Greensboro Couple Held After Month-Old Baby Deserted On Porch

A month-old girl was left on the porch of Mr and Mrs Hassell on Tomlinson street in Greensboro. An elderly couple, Anderson Hudson and Mary Hudson, both white and near Grenwood sanitarium, are in custody after confessing to the act. Police search for the mother or parents continues as the couple keeps the child. The Hudsons say the infant was given to them by an unknown motorist who placed the baby in the woman’s arms and left.

High Point Trails In State Manufacturing Value

Government census data show Winston-Salem leading North Carolina in finished product value, with Durham second and Charlotte third. High Point ranks fourth, ahead of Greensboro, and its finish totals 5,931,761 dollars versus Greensboro’s 3,464,328. The Industrial department of the Commercial club notes the survey and mentions other cities like Asheville and Wilmington. Extension means much to the city High Point voters to decide bond issue

On December 20 voters in High Point township will decide whether to issue 19 bonds totaling 25 060 to fund an extension of the Carolina and Yadkin River railway from Denton to Norfolk Southern. If approved, bonds are exchangeable for 25 000 in stock once trains operate, with the goal of creating five competing routes to major cities and improving freight and passenger service.

General Scott urges universal training to replace volunteers

Washington December 18 Major General Scott chief of staff told the senate military committee the army staff recommends discarding the volunteer system in favor of universal training and service. He said universal training would be democratic reliable economical and efficient and would prepare the nation before war arrives. He warned the volunteer system is extravagant and dangerous and cited lessons from Mexico and Europe. He estimated future war needs of 1 500 000 trained troops ready at outbreak and another 1 500 000 to follow within days.

Paris reports from the war office that French forces have captured 11587 German prisoners on the Nerdun front since December 15. The tally reflects rapid advances as fighting continues across occupied zones.

Christmas Tree Fund Raises Total for Enterprise Drive

Camp Fire Girls report contributions totaling 14.53 from first ward and 14.58 bringing the Community Christmas tree fund to 28.78. The Boy Scouts will secure the tree at the vacant lot opposite the Southern station and decorate it. The Camp Fire Girls will continue soliciting funds and the Woman's Club music department will host the program on Saturday at 7:30. Gifts to the poor will be distributed Saturday morning.

Four Evangelistic Services Energize Friends Meeting

The Friends church held four lively services yesterday with strong Bible school interest. Rev Kit trell spoke on Christ's second coming at 11. Some conversions occurred at the afternoon women's meeting while the men's session met at the Presbyterian church. At 7 30 the preacher's theme was Hiding From God with definite decisions for Christ. Miss Margaret Mast sang at each service and attendance was capacity. Evening services continue at 7 30 with all invited.
