West Berliners gain Christmas wall crossing pact

West Berlin and East German authorities signed a pact to allow West Berliners to visit relatives in East Berlin during the Christmas season. Permits begin Wednesday at 12 West Berlin points. about 400,000 eligible. Signing parties included Horse Korber for West Berlin and Erich Wendt for East Germany. Mayor Willy Brandt refused to sign, citing recognition concerns. Political implications split among officials, with some calling it technical and others fearing a move toward neutral status for Berlin.

Johnson Suffers Setback In House On Foreign Aid

In Washington the House advanced a confrontation over foreign aid, voting 249 to 135 to hold spending and reject a $2.8 billion package. President Johnson blasted the action as a dangerous reduction, arguing the country cannot curb communism and promote freedom with less funding. A Senate amendment sought to block private financing of wheat sales to the Communist bloc.

Phoenix girls seek funds to save derelict Leo the lion

Twelve Phoenix girls aged 9 to 13 formed a club to help Leo, a neglected derelict lion. They held backyard shows and an art sale, netting 153.02, but zoo officials say they need 15 827.63 to provide a proper enclosure and life for Leo. The owner was never found, and Leo has suffered in a small cage.

Conviction of Reds Overturned

A federal appeals court overturned the conviction of the Communist party for failure to register as an agent of the Soviet Union. The DC Circuit ruled the government must prove a volunteer available to register under the 1950 Subversive Activities Control Act. The party faced up to 120000 in fines across 12 counts for daily registration failures and for information on officers members and finances. The decision sent the case back to the district court for a new trial or a directed acquittal.

Johnson Urges End Of Cold War At UN Address

President Johnson addressed 113 UN members in New York calling to end the cold war, join a global crusade against hunger, disease and ignorance, and strengthen peace. He pledged continued U.S. support for the UN and urged arms control while stressing a universal effort toward human welfare. The speech followed Kennedy’s assassination and highlighted a new era of diplomacy and peacekeeping.

McNamara Supports Western Arms Edge Against Reds

McNamara told a NATO ministerial meeting that new appraisals show the West could handle a war without surrendering to the Reds. He outlined U.S. strength projections through 1968 including 1,500 intercontinental missiles, 500 plus long range missiles, over 500 bombers on alert, and expanded airlift capacity. He urged NATO to boost conventional forces and noted NATO divisions meet near 23 now versus the 30 target.

Novak tells of profit split in Baker case

Mrs. Novak testified before the Senate Rules Committee that she and Baker discussed investing with him, saying he was short on cash and proposed a split of profits from stock purchases. She said the Novaks put up 12000 for 3000 shares later valued at 66889.86 with a profit of 54,889.86 and that Baker knew of a stock available for the purchase.
