Jack W. Collins 27 from Monongahela Pa attempted to rob a Charlotte bank with a fountain pen as a supposed gun. He handed a note to a teller last Friday and was detained by a teller before police arrived, leading to a pending trial.
Raleigh reports Robert Winston appointee of Gov Kerr Scott will retire in early January from the State Alcoholic Board of Control chairmanship. His term runs to April 23, 1955, but farm business in Johnston County requires his leaving the post. Winston backed Scott in 1948 and was later appointed ABC chief.
The North Carolina chapter of the Transportation Association of America formed after a meeting of Tar Heel executives. Ernest E. Norris and Donald D. Conn warned that government policies of the last two decades threaten the industry, fearing transportation could be the first victim of a socialist state and urged business leaders to back TAA plans to counter the trend.
Trading on 11 operating flue cured tobacco markets in the North Carolina Virginia Old Belt saw price declines from $1 to $4 with light volume and lower quality.
