A spectacular fire tore through a six story Manhattan branch post office on Friday night and into today using mail chutes as flues. Three workers signaled their plight with flashlights before being evacuated.
Firefighters rescued occupants from a sixth floor ledge using aerial and scaling ladders as a city fire raged. Fire Chief John T. O'Hagan called it the largest single building fire in 10 to 20 years, with smoke blanketing blocks and icy streets. William Edmondson 38 of King North Carolina survived a bridge collapse when the road tilted and then dropped into the river. GM and the UAW concluded a three year national contract after a 30 hour session. The agreement covers 380000 GM workers with wage increases of 20 cents across the board plus 30 cents for skilled workers and 3 percent in the final two years. AMC has no new pact yet with talks resuming January 3. Reuther warned AMC’s financial problems limit bargaining while calling the GM deal noninflationary.
Greece’s military regime offered King Constantine a conditional return as a figurehead after his abdication to end a rebellion. Rome exile head Archbishop Ieronymous delivered the terms to Constantine, who reportedly demanded resignation of the government before returning.
