Shotgun Blast Kills Siler City Businessman

In Siler City AP H Elton Stout a prominent banker and businessman was killed by a shotgun blast Friday as he prepared for a hunting trip. Coroner Baxley says the weapon likely discharged accidentally while Stout was removing it from a closet. He died en route to a hospital.

Midwest Warms Up As Cold Wave Hits Northeast

The Associated Press reports a sharp temperature split with zero to subzero readings in upstate New York and parts of New England. Midwest areas eased, though Wisconsin saw temperatures just below zero while many regions remained very cold from the Northern Plains to the Great Lakes.

Katangans Outnumbered U N Successes Reported In Elisabethville

U N troops drove into Elisabethville and seized two Katangan strongpoints in heavy fighting amid mortar and machinegun fire. Katangan forces reportedly retreated toward Kipushi and Kolwezi as U N forces overran the Lido Hotel and a railroad tunnel commanding main roads. The assault targeted Camp Massart while Swedish and Irish units cut routes from the base.

President Kennedy safely toured Caracas driving through crowded streets amid security from heavy rain and threats. He urged Latin Americans to resist alien philosophies that promise prosperity yet erode liberties while promoting U S aid linked self help under the Alliance for Progress.
