Appeals Rejected in Henderson Strike Decisions by High Court

The North Carolina Supreme Court upheld lower court rulings in three Henderson strike cases. It denied appeals from strikers held in contempt for violating picketing orders around Harriet-Henderson Cotton Mills and rejected appeals of Elliott Caulder and Charlie C. Harris, who faced jail terms for brick throwing and riot. The decision leaves one major Henderson case pending involving Boyd E. Payton and seven union colleagues, convicted of conspiracy. Two contempt sentences stood: Joyce Ann Clark and Raines two days in jail and $250 fines each. Collis Strickland 20 days and $100 fine. The court noted no accuser confrontation request was made at trial in Vance County.
