A Wilson North Carolina fire gutted three buildings in the business district early today forcing 60 to 70 residents to evacuate into sub freezing weather. The structures housed the Employment Security Commission office an Army Navy surplus store and the Acme Candy Co. No one was injured though main power lines were destroyed cutting electricity in a wide area. Some residents were left heatless as the apartments above the buildings were evacuated. Fire companies all responded and no damage estimate was given. Walls collapsed and smoke may have damaged nearby properties.

In San Diego a 16 year old boy confesses to slaying Lois Pendergast and her four children. He says he did not want to do it and that they were all he had in the world. Police had pursued him since Friday when the victims were found dead.
Cleo Bullard of Carmall Street was struck by a southbound passenger train at the Randolph Street crossing in Thomasville around 11 30 a m. She was rushed to City Memorial Hospital with severe head and leg injuries. A Lexington man witnessed the accident. Bullard, a South Carolina resident visiting Thomasville for about two months, was the injured party.
