North Carolina Adopts Unemployment Compensation Act

Raleigh reports the special session of the North Carolina General Assembly adjourned after enacting a 13,000 word social security unemployment compensation bill. The act took effect at 12 26 p m after signatures from the lieutenant governor and speaker as governor vetoes are not possible in the state. The 1937 biennial session will start January 6 and lawmakers commended Governor Ehringhaus.

Grim search for missing airliner in Wasatch mountains

Weather hampered the two day hunt for Western Air Express flight carrying seven aboard. Ground crews and CCC workers, BYU students, and 15 mounted searchers scoured Alpine area between Salt Lake City and Provo. 21 American Republics Sign Pact

In Buenos Aires the Inter-American Peace conference approved the United States plan for consultation if peace is menaced with unanimous backing from all 21 American republics. The measure, called epochal by Cordell Hull, urges completion of five existing peace treaties with similar unanimous support and echoes the Montevideo Pan-American conference of 1933.

Truck driver held on bond after fatal school bus crash

Fayetteville dispatch reports J Henry Gibbs, truck driver in last week’s crash that killed four children and injured 18, was jailed on a $1000 bond after a coroner's jury inquiry. Kenneth Faircloth, bus driver, was released on bond. Jury cited driver condition, truck mechanics, or crowded cab as possible causes. Gibbs testified to long hours and 30 mph crash moment.

War department engineers heard there was a public demand for finishing the Florida Gulf Atlantic Waterway at a public hearing.
