Overloaded Namyung Ho Ferry Sinks With 276 Aboard
The Namyung Ho ferry sank in the Korea Strait between Cheju Island and Pusan with 256 passengers and 20 crew aboard. Eight survivors were rescued by Japanese ships, three by a Korean patrol boat, and a 12th by a fishing vessel. Authorities fear most perished as rescue slowed in cold seas with 250 ton cargo aboard. Police noted the vessel left Cheju without the captain, and weather remained calm with two foot waves.

Draft To Stay Below No 100 For A While
Washington AP reports that men in the 1971 draft pool with numbers 109 or below will be eligible for the January draft call. The Pentagon announced it would call 17 000 men in January and that 100 will likely be the top number for several months. The highest number in 1970 was 195, with many boards not reaching it. The extended priority group remains eligible for the first three months of the year and is called ahead of the 1971 pool.
