The annual Christmas Family Night will be held tonight at 7 30 with Rev. John Errington of Orlando delivering an illustrated lecture "A Pilgrimage to Bethlehem" illustrated by his Palestine photographs. Christmas music to follow and a social hour with refreshments in the church parlor.

Mrs. Lena Squires 61 widow of John Squires died at her 412 North Hamilton Street home at 9 10 this morning after a stroke two weeks earlier. Born April 14 1881 in Chapel Hill she lived in this city about 40 years. Survived by son Lyman Squires daughter Mrs Joseph Clodfelter two brothers and three sisters and three grandchildren. Funeral at 2 pm Thursday from First Baptist Church with Dr A B Conrad officiating. Burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Body to Sechrest Funeral Home prior to services.
Postmaster S. C. Clark reports mail volume at High Point post office this season far exceeds prior records and cites ongoing war industry migrations and troop movements. He urges even earlier Christmas mailing as staff shortages due to draftees hamper deliveries.
President Roosevelt nominates Senator Josh Lee of Oklahoma to the Civil Aeronautics Board to succeed the resigning George Baker. Lee, defeated for re-election, would join the board as Baker departs for an overseas mission amid a Republican upset by Ed H. Moore.
Mrs Myrtle J. Smith 51 wife of Martin A. Smith died at her daughter s home in Mitchells Grove High Point Route Four shortly after 10 o clock last night after ten years of declining health She was born January 5 1891 in Guilford County and lived in Gainesville Texas 21 years before returning to High Point in August 1933 A 37 year member of Hickory Chapel Wesleyan Methodist Church she married Mr Smith November 25 1909 Surviving: daughter Mrs J C Putnam son Nelson A Smith staff sergeant in the U S Air Corps two sisters five brothers and three grandchildren The body will return to the husband s home Tuesday at 5 pm Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 pm from Hickory Chapel Church Rev J A Bolen officiating Interment in the church cemetery.
Arthur F. Neve executive secretary of the High Point Community Chest spoke to the Civitan Club at the Sheraton Hotel. Charles F. Risch presided and W. B. Hall introduced Neve who outlined the Chest’s present position and what stockholders hope to accomplish. He cited dollars raised since 1935 and praised civic spirit of workers. The club sent Christmas folders to William Alexander Hubert Leigh and Rev. Julian Lindsay. No Civitan meeting next week.
The prime minister describes Britain’s defense focus on home heavy tanks and anti submarine work. He details forming an Atlantic war committee in 1941 and reconstituting it in 1942 with himself as chair and Sir Stafford Cripps as vice chair, plus other senior officers and ministers. He cites Smuts’s participation and defends the Churchill tank amid previous production criticisms.
A Christmas program will be presented at Archdale School this evening at 7 30 by the Parent Teacher Association. H C Twining will chair the business meeting and pupils will participate in the program after the meeting. The High Point Christian Endeavor Union mass meeting also occurs tonight at 7 30 at Springfield Friends Church with Rev. Thomas E Strickland as speaker and installation of new officers.
Soviet Izvestia reports renewed German offensives southwest of Stalingrad with heavy tank use and large enemy casualties. Red Army claims multiple counterattacks repelled, over 1,000 enemy dead, and gains including a populated place seized. Widespread rail destruction and trench fighting described.
John Hayden Price Jones, a British sailor on furlough, headed for Washington to visit but hitched a ride with a motorist who believed he meant Washington, North Carolina. Jones had come from Greenville, and the mix up left him in Greenville awaiting further directions.
New York stocks report from AP at 2 p.m. on December 15 notes market movements across major indices with price changes for key industrial and financial shares. Trading activity is characterized by mixed results and fluctuating gains and losses among blue-chip equities.
Allied air forces pounded Rommel’s retreat along the Tunisian front as refitting Axis units from El Agheila faced heavy bombardment. American P-40s and Royal Air Force fighters attacked ports at Tunis and La Goulette, rails at Sousse, and ships at Bizerte while ground forces advanced toward Tripoli amid muddy Tunisian roads and minefields.
A lone German raider dropped high explosive bombs on a small east coast town, killing at least six and injuring others. A heavily-hit hospital emptied its patients while several people remained trapped in the wreckage as witnesses reported the aircraft firing its machine gun along the street.
