Tommy Garner and his wife returned to their Player Street home as power was reconnected after the city of High Point shut off service for over a month over an alleged unpaid bill tied to Mrs. Garner. Garner plans a federal suit for $10,000 if his case succeeds.
High Point Historical Society reports higher membership this year as Museum Director John Bauckman plans stronger outreach to schools and communities. The drive lists about 45 members of the 1859 Club and roughly 250 general members with fees from five to a hundred dollars. Dale Montgomery chairs the drive.
Rep Ike Andrews urges tobacco farmers to vote yes in the referendum to extend the quota and price support program for 1977 78 and 79 marketing years. He notes farmers in flue cured producing states favor the measure and that passage requires a two thirds majority.
New Guilford County Commissioners Ogden Deal and Forrest Campbell say layoffs for political reasons are unlikely and praise current staff. They expect no immediate firings as the county manager’s organization remains intact, with other officials echoing a wait and see stance.
Southern Railway announces Linwood Yard a 46 yard classification project in Davidson County near Linwood. The $40 million yard, expected by 1978, will switch about 3000 cars daily using microwave and mini computer controls to improve transit times in Virginia and the Carolinas.
