Nixon Seeks Mideast Balance Defending Israel
The Nixon administration outlines a Mideast balance favoring Israel defense over Arab advances while limiting direct Israeli reach into Egypt. US estimates show Israel 285,000 troops against Egypt 400,000 and Jordan 100,000, with air power key and Egypt lacking pilots to fly added jets. Israel would face missile defenses and possible Soviet or Egyptian planes if it expanded air operations.
