Appreciation for aid to New Bern fire victims

Mrs. O. B. Mendenhall received a letter from W. M. Jacobs chairing the relief committee praising prompt liberal contributions. The note notes Red Cross will direct distribution of funds and supplies after a blaze left over a thousand homes ruined, and thanks neighbors for support during the crisis.

Pink Beck Held After City Jail Transfer

Pink Beck, a young white man, was arrested in Winston-Salem on multiple charges and brought to High Point Jail then moved to the city jail. Police say a new larceny of an automobile charge from Mount Airy was added to seven prior counts including speeding and assault on an officer with intent to kill. He faces trial in the police court Friday morning.

Spectators Disappointed as Court Session Called Off

Local police court spectators faced disappointment when no session occurred due to Guilford Superior Court terms in Greensboro. Several East Point police and local lawyers were away for the criminal court session, with the police court adjourned to Friday morning. Mrs Irene Osgood of North Hampton England died after a month long illness.

New Trial Granted for Thomas in Allen Slaying

Raleigh December 13 The supreme court granted a new trial to O G Thomas a Charlotte automobile salesman convicted of second degree murder in Cabarrus county for the October 25 1921 killing of A J Allen near Kannapolis. The court ruled Judge Bis Ray failed to clearly state the evidence and applicable law to the jury. Thomas claimed self defense.

Seaman Identified by Photograph in Point Hope Case

Mrs G C Fott of High Point identified John O Webster, a Carolina Steamship Co seaman who drowned last week off Union Wharf Charleston S C, as her brother in a Charleston notification and a received photograph. Question remains if the body will be brought for interment. Webster had left High Point years ago.

The Southeastern Veneer Association held its 18th annual convention at the Sheraton in High Point with 21 members from North and South Carolina. L. V. Phillips was re elected president. a plan to publish a weekly veneer market report was approved to aid manufacturers and furniture makers in stabilizing prices. State Poultry Show Under Way In Greensburg

Dewey McNeil Arrested Here on Multiple Charges

Dewey McNeil, a young white man living near the Pickett cotton mills, was arrested yesterday at his home on charges of retailing whiskey immoral conduct operating an automobile while intoxicated and speeding. He was found concealed in a closet and is in city lockup awaiting further action.

Compromise Ends Prosecution Over British Schooner Message of Peace

In Dec 3 report from Raleigh, federal cases against Captain Coleman and the British schooner Message of Peace seized off Ocracoke Island with over 1,000 cases of liquor are dropped. The vessel is to be released to Coleman. cargo is forfeited to federal prohibition. Indictments against Coleman Claud Graham and other defendants are to be quashed.

Unique Chapel Exercises Held in Spanish at South Main

Tomorrow morning at 8 40 the regular Thursday chapel exercises at the South Main Street graded school will be conducted in Spanish by high school students. The public is invited. L R Johnston, principal, announced the event noting Spanish chapel exercises now at the local high school as evidence of the success of the language department. About eighty to ninety students will participate with all singing in Spanish.

Mass Meeting in City Open to All Citizens

A mass meeting is planned in the chamber of commerce rooms next Monday at 7 15 pm. The session will be open for discussion and cover many topics of city interest with High Point residents invited to attend. Cadets Wayne Sullivan Amos Kearns and Welch Harris from Staunton Military Academy Staunton VA are expected to arrive tomorrow night to spend Christmas with their parents.
