U S Marines and North Vietnamese troops fought for 12 hours spilling into the DMZ. Twelve Marines and eight North Vietnamese were killed with 30 Marines wounded. U S casualties topped 30,000 dead in eight years of war, while total enemy deaths reached about 423,000 with 1,715 last week. Air and artillery strikes targeted entrenched positions as Marines moved from The Rockpile to engage north of the southern DMZ edge.
