Wilmington Celebrates Largest Living Christmas Tree
In Wilmington a massive water oak in Hilton Park is festooned as the world’s largest living Christmas tree. Four thousand lights illuminate the tree each December as crowds attend nightly concerts and tours, drawing about 100000 visitors annually. The tree, over 7 feet tall with a 110 foot spread, survived Hurricane Hazel with no damage and has stood as the centerpiece of a citywide holiday celebration each year since 1929.

Wild animals may vanish from Africa warns Grzimek
Dr Bernhard Grzimek, director of a leading zoo, warns Africa’s wildlife could be exterminated within 50 years. He cites elephant numbers near 20 000 and the cape lion extinct, with game preserves unlikely to halt the decline as human population grows. He notes Congo preserves require special access and urges safeguard areas to delay but not stop annihilation.
