Hickory Furniture Firms Operate At Full Capacity

Hickory area furniture plants in case goods and upholstery run at top speed ahead of Christmas. Most case goods exceed 40 hours weekly while upholstery works OT. prices rise 5 to 20 percent due to higher freight rubber costs, raising chair prices by 1 to 5 dollars. Backlogs run 30 to 45 days as markets approach January shows.

Thayer Inc to Show New Baby Cribs at Market

Thayer Inc will debut a new crib line manufactured in Maiden at the High Point Southern Furniture Market in January. The Pendleton plant in Maiden is now producing four priced crib models with shipments already going to Thayer accounts. Finishes include maple birch white and gray.

Employment Gains in Southern Furniture Plants Rise

A survey shows October employment up 5.1 percent from April in southern plants. Hours worked reached October 1953 levels with a 3.5 percent rise on average. Most plants run 49 to 55 hours weekly, with an average near 44. Shipments are about 10 percent below 1955. SFMA covers 70 percent of bedroom and 53 percent of dining room production in the U.S. plus about one third of upholstered furniture in SFMA territory.

Boy Shoots Father in Detroit Family Tragedy

Detroit police say Sonny Lee Fenwick shot and killed his father Lee Fenwick after frequent arguments. The 48 year old man died on arrival at Receiving Hospital after being shot with a shotgun in the home.
