A 34 year old interior decorator Carl Amarella killed his wife Millie 33 and children Sandra 6 Larry 4 Janet 1 before taking his own life. Neighbors described him as mild with insomnia and a love for guns. A note asked his attorney to dispose of assets and money. Time of shootings placed at 3 a.m. Sunday in Fort Lauderdale Florida.
At Man's Point near Victorville California a 70 ton granite slab split from a cliff and crushed a holiday picnic killing four people and injuring two others. Victims named are Robert Asper 35 Jessie Isom 45 Harold Boyee 40 and Frances Morris 38. The injured include Frances Long 55 and Clifford Morris 38. Rescuers tunneled two hours to reach the injured and witnesses recalled the sudden, silent catastrophe.
Over the weekend storms lashed the Midwest and Great Lakes, killing at least 11 and injuring many. Arkansas and Missouri suffered most deaths and property damage with twisters striking Clinton Beebee Velvet Ridge Cross Roads Providence and Bradford.

Charles A. Webb longtime chairman of the Asheville Citizen and Times died in Asheville at 83 after illness from virus pneumonia. Webb, a former attorney and state senator, led the paper and its WWNC radio, chaired state Democratic committees, and helped found the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He was a Warren ton native and UNC graduate.
