Fifth Week Since Armfield Murder as Leads Stay Deadends
Friday marks five weeks since furniture retailer James Armfield was shot leaving Wood-Armfield Furniture Co. on Main Street. High Point police say leads are deadends and a reward of 99625 has yielded little information. A sawed off 12 caliber rifle and a jacket bearing the name Bennie Gill were found near the scene. The attacker fled, Armfield suffered facial bruises and a broken wrist. Police describe a 5'10" to 150-160 pound black man with a mustache as a person of interest and urge witnesses to come forward confidentially. The case remains unsolved.

Revamp Two Public Education Proposals To Be Aired
Two High Point proposals to reshape North Carolina public education will be heard tonight by the Public Schools Laws Commission in Greensboro. One plan would make the state superintendent appointive and mainly elective on the State Board of Education, create three divisions headed by associate superintendents, and rework lines of authority to boost local participation and policy coordination. The second proposal seeks to adjust nonteaching budget allocations to local units, aiming to cut pupil teacher ratios and strengthen basic skills instruction by aligning funding with the community college system standards.
