President Eisenhower urged a noble war against hunger in India and the world as crowds cheered at the World Agricultural Fair. He praised India as a peace influence and pledged U S help to solve India’s food shortages, highlighting food family friendship and freedom in the exhibit theme.
Employment declined by over a million in November to 65 640 000. Unemployment rose nearly 400 000 to 3 670 000. The drop was partly seasonal but still a record for November. Unemployment rose only slightly above seasonal expectations. It was the second highest idle total for a November since World War II. The postwar record for November is 3 833 000 unemployed in 1958.
The American Medical Assn Journal says evidence is insufficient to warrant the view that cigarette smoking is the major factor in rising lung cancer. An editorial questions Dr. Leroy E. Burney's Public Health Service report, noting gaps in explaining gender and urban rural differences.
A nationwide AP survey of 24 cities finds shoppers with more money to spend. Merchants expect a record Christmas with luxury items and high priced toys in demand. Charles W. Stewart, 52, the alleged mastermind of North Carolina’s Ivy Bluff escape, says he broke out to expose prison mistreatment. He describes the flight at high speed, his reluctance to kill, and his status as a lone wolf after seizing weapons and fleeing in stolen cars.

Martinsville Virginia AP Charles W Yank Stewart the ringleader of an Ivy Bluff prison escape was captured after a car chase ended when the vehicle failed to turn at the Smith River bridge and flipped Stewart 52 previously jailed for armed robbery and store breaking had been identified by state police. Six escapees remain at large with some believed to be in Lynchburg Roanoke area and Arlington Virginia.
Washington moves to aluminum talks as Finnegan cites no fixed restart date for steel negotiations after Eisenhower urged round the clock bargaining. Aluminum talks resume in Chicago with Alcoa Reynolds and Kaiser, while 33 000 workers are affected and a steel settlement could follow.
Martinsville Virginia AP reports Charles W. Stewart known as Yank, ringleader of Ivy Bluff prison break, lies in Henry County jail recovering after a high speed chase. He receives breakfast through bars as he regains strength and comments on the escape to a WHEE reporter.
A doctor in Alaska flies his plane to remote Virginia hospitals on his day off to provide free haircuts. A disabled New York woman spends spare time cheering tuberculosis patients. The Enterprise previews a heart warming feature, The Unselfish Americans, in Sunday’s edition.
The government announces a voluntary ban on stilbestrol used to fatten poultry amid safety concerns. Officials urge disposal of affected parts and assure consumers the rest of the meat is safe if skin liver and kidneys look normal. Secretary Flemming says manufacturers will suspend sales immediately and retailers will halt sales of stilbestrol treated birds.
State Agriculture Department officials say no hormone contaminated poultry has been produced in North Carolina, the nation's second largest producer. The agency criticizes statements by Fleming for not identifying where contaminated birds originated and reiterates North Carolina law bans hormones in poultry feed.
