Escheats Committee Prefers Voluntary Payments Over Lawsuits
Raleigh December 9 The escheats committee of the university trustees would rather have money now in dead bank accounts than risk a flood of lawsuits against banks. The group said progress is being made while avoiding naming banks. Of 370 banks, 308 have paid or asked for more time. 62 have reported none. Among banks, 272 of 324 state banks have reported about 84 percent, and 36 of 46 national banks about 78 percent. Twenty national banks have paid more than the 119 state banks that have paid in part or whole. The committee will continue to seek voluntary compliance for a few more months.
