The radio reported German forces lost Vac, northeast of Budapest, amid renewed Russian reinforcements in the battle for the capital. Transocean said German lines had to be pulled back several miles east of Budapest as fighting continued.
U S 77th division pushes along the Ormoc coast in Leyte as Japanese defenders resist. Army Sixth Army under Lt Gen Walter Kruger approaches from three directions to seal Ormoc. Naval patrols sink six small vessels and set seven ablaze while air forces destroy or damage several freighters. The 77th advances two miles from the landing point to seize Camp Downs near Ormoc.
In a formal order of the day Stalin says the Russian army under Mar Malinovsky pushed through German defenses to a 25 mile front northeast of Budapest and reached the Danube north of the capital.
Broadcast reports Soviet forces push southward toward Budapest and strike northward while not attempting a Danube crossing at Vac. Berlin stated Russians are slashing ahead in the region.
The Hungarian cabinet disclosed today that Sopron and nearby Vac were affected as Russian forces close in. Sopron, a commercial and industrial center 112 miles east of Budapest near Lake Fertő, lies near the Austrian border and Odenburg.
Troops moved on the railroad town of Hatvan located 15 miles northeast of Buda while advances pressed toward Vac. The seizure of Vac would isolate the capital region, with page six noting the continuation of the report.
Allied forces breach San Prospero on the Lamone river as they tighten the encirclement of Faenza and push toward Imola. The fighting is described as bitter with troops pulling back toward the larger center of Imola. In Detroit a divorce suit seeks annulment in a fraud case involving multiple marriages and forged checks.
Burlington police launched a wide search for Donald Newman, 19, charged with slugging Erwin A. Holt, a prominent Burlington business leader. Holt reported he was struck with a bottle and robbed of his pocketbook containing about 30 dollars while writing a receipt for a note Holt had endorsed for the accused man.
Jack Floyd Adams, 73, a ring leader among five men in a 75 prisoner rebellion at Atlanta Federal Prison, slashed his wrist in solitary confinement. He wounded himself and was hospitalized after the switch from seizure of the segregation building to surrender to Morgan Blake, the Atlanta columnist.
American B 17s and long range bombers hit Stuttgart railyards with 1500 tons of explosives as British Lancasters Mosquitos and US fighters pressed through snow. Patton’s forces and Duisburg area targets cited while weather worsened flight conditions.
Athens dispatch reports that one fifth of the city has been cleared of armed bands as a rift grows within the seven party EAM coalition. General Stephanos Serafis pledged to remain under British command to Maj. Gen. R M Scobie while tensions rise over disarmament. Former ministers Akoutsis Svolos and Anghelopoulos deny EAM membership.

The Tokyo broadcast was recorded by the FCC.
U S Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor reports that one B 29 over Tokyo dropped incendiaries while a second B 29 could not drop. An hour later an inland sea raid targeted the Seto Naikai area. Iwo Jima threat to the American Superfortress base at Saipan diminished.
London dated December 9 reports a brewing showdown in the minority Labour Party following a 279 to 30 Commons confidence vote on Prime Minister Churchill's policy in liberated countries. Churchill drew solid support from Conservatives and Labour ministers, while only Ivor Thomas backed the government. Labour ranks may demand a party confidence vote as a conference opens to draft the party line including a demand to dispatch a House investigation to Athens on the Greek crisis.
O Max Gardner newly appointed chairman of the reconversion advisory board says demobilization and reconversion are central to the postwar period. Roosevelt picked Gardner, a Shelby North Carolina figure, for the post after confirming 12 board members. Gardner praises Byrnes and outlines plans for job creation and foreign trade while highlighting his long career in law and business.
A large explosion at the Hercules powder plant near Hercules California occurred around 8 20 am Pacific War Time. Three men were believed killed and several injured according to a Wilmington Delaware office spokesman. News quoted guards at the yard gate reporting two fatalities near the magazine. The blast shattered windows, sent debris flying, and shook buildings across Marin county and Mare Island naval yard.
CHUNGKING December 9 The railroad town of Shangssu near Tuhshan was recaptured in the Chinese drive to clear Kweichow of Japanese forces. The Tuhshan sector is reported cleared of enemy remnants and pursuit to the south continues. Shangssu is 82 miles southeast of Kweiyang near the Kwangsi border. Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek’s reinforced divisions have ousted most invaders.
Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek has agreed in principle to Communist participation in China’s national government and in directing military affairs, authorities reported today from Chungking.
American forces push deeper into the Saar as Third Army crosses into Sarreguemines area. Allied losses and German casualties mount with 152000 German casualties, 84000 prisoners, and seven divisions destroyed as fighting rages through snowbound terrain and house to house actions near Haguenau and Bischwiller.
Senate Foreign Relations Committee, chaired by Connally, will publicly quiz new state department appointees. New nominations include James C. Dunn and Brig. Gen. Julius C. Holmes as assistant secretaries. Previously named undersecretary Joseph C. Grew and assistant secretaries W. L. Clayton Archibald MacLeish and Nelson Rockefeller were questioned before, while Dunn and Holmes now join the proceedings. Dunn, 53, heads the division of European affairs. Holmes, 55, is Kansas reserve officer who served at SHAPE overseeing political affairs.
