Japanese air strikes pounded Nanking as Chinese defenses remained around the city. Secretary Atcheson and three embassy staff boarded the Panay to evacuate Americans and safeguard interests, planning to remain in the embassy offices for the day.

Senator Smith and fellow southern senators plan to push an amendment in the farm bill requiring the Commodity Credit Corporation to buy cotton until the midling price reaches 12 cents a pound. The measure would buy up to 6,000,000 bales while keeping government loan cotton from being released, with presidential approval for any below 12 cent prices.
In Oregon, Missouri, Mrs. Glenn Large 27 and five children perished when a fire engulfed their farm home. Large, 31, suffered burns while attempting to rescue them, as he tried to pass the children from a stairway blocked by flames. He fell from an icy porch roof while guiding his wife.

Asheville tobacco market opened with 208,062 pounds sold at an average of 25.63 dollars per hundredweight. Prices ranged from 2 to 40 dollars per hundredweight as farmers reported a promising start to the burley season. No bids were rejected on opening day.
Fifteen rhesus monkeys arrived in Chicago from the east for use by bacteriologists seeking the cause of a virulent intestinal disease that has killed 11 babies at St Beth’s Hospital. The monkeys from India were obtained by the Chicago Board of Health from a New York animal dealer.
A fire in a two story tenement in Knoxville Tennessee killed nine people including seven children. The blaze trapped victims in their beds shortly after midnight while twenty two others escaped. Gordon Tate escaped by leaping from a second story window while McKinley Connaster saved his infant son before jumping.

In New Orleans a 19 year old Albany Louisiana farmer Frank Chabina Jr receives a donated cornea from 67 year old John Amos Bt Joseph Louisiana after Amos’s infection leaves his eye useless. Doctors expect to determine success in eight days. The pair befriended in Charity Hospital where Amos calls the gift a blessing and Frank calls it the greatest thing that happened.
