Last Pipe Laid For Alaska Pipeline Project
Workers finished the last pipe for the 800 mile trans Alaska pipeline after a winter race in six feet of snow at Thompson Pass. Alyeska spokesman Lou Cancelmi noted the steep route required winches and a ski lift to move materials. 160 miles remain to be pressure tested next spring and fewer than 40 welds may need rewelding. Even with a June 1977 finish, oil destination remains uncertain due to port readiness and potential oil swap plans.
