China Church Unobtrusive Says MacInnes Visit
Donald I. MacInnes of the National Council of Churches reports from five Chinese cities that Protestant services continue in Peking with a small congregation and a functioning mosque in Hangchow. He notes China’s church is being de institutionalized and de clericalized with clergy and laity sharing secular work. Ting estimates Protestants at 700,000 to 800,000, about one per thousand of the population, and bishops say underground churches are not the norm while constitutional religious freedom exists.

The report argues that the lessons of the Chinese experience for Christian faith have not been understood but evaded and that there has been no genuine repentance. The remark highlights ongoing concerns about interpreting historical events within faith contexts.
