Civil Rights Hearing Opens Over Voting Records Fight
The Civil Rights Commission begins its first public hearing in Montgomery on Monday, examining Negro voting conditions in six rural Alabama counties while counties resist releasing registration files. Subpoenas cover Barbour, Bullock, Dallas, Owndes, Macon and Wilcox. If records stay secret, the commission may still use testimony to push federal civil rights action.

Eastern Wage Proposal Is Turned Down
Eastern Air Lines machinists and flight engineers have been on strike for 14 days. The union rejected a 49 cents per hour raise for head machinists and inspectors and 44 cents for regular machinists, calling it unacceptable. The company said the offer was only slightly above settlements with other airlines. District 100 leader George M. Brown said no broader issues were addressed and the company must propose a way to resume talks. No meetings were scheduled, and negotiations remain at a standstill.
