Georgia still supports seven Civil War widow grants
In Georgia seven surviving Civil War widows receive $110 monthly state grants, plus possible $70 federal benefits, costing the state about $9,200 yearly. The widows, aged 82 to 101, share memories of war while living in nursing homes and continuing to tell of their marriages to young husbands who went to war long ago.
