North Vietnamese troops downed a US helicopter near Dak To in the central highlands, killing all 11 aboard including a South Vietnamese colonel and his American adviser. The crash occurred about 15 miles northeast of Dak To, with ground fighting continuing along the Cambodian border and near the demilitarized zone as U.S. and South Vietnamese forces reported heavy losses for North Vietnamese troops in multiple clashes.
NATO allies quietly pause Greece amid accusations of undemocratic acts and torture of opponents. The move coincides with Athens being suspended from the Council of Europe, as foreign ministers prepare to meet in Paris to decide next steps. No plan to suspend Greece from NATO is considered at present.
The treaty bound members to defend democracy but seating shifts hit NATO. Greece gave up the presidency of the NATO Council amid illness of the foreign minister and did not send cabinet ministers to current sessions, instead sending undersecretary George Tsitsopoulos.
