A printers strike at The High Point Enterprise continues with no signs of settlement. Local 878 of the International Typographical Union represents about 48 employees as picket lines form at the Enterprise building. production continues with non printer staff filling in. Negotiations since November 1965 failed to resume after Monday’s last session, with issues including apprentice training grievances work processes and jurisdiction.
Pittsburgh AP reports a new wave of steel price hikes by Coe Steel Corp and Armco Steel Corp lifting cold rolled sheets by 5 dollars a ton. Armco added 4 dollars for galvanized sheet and strip. Industry sources expect further widespread boosts across the steel sector affecting autos appliances storage tanks and industrial machinery.
A new oral antituberculosis drug Myambutol Ethambutol now available via doctors and hospitals nationwide. Lederle Laboratories reports trials with over 2,900 TB patients showing significant effectiveness especially when used with older drugs like isoniazid. The World Health Organization notes 15 to 20 million global TB cases with 2 to 3 million deaths annually.
A 1964 public health study reported 50 800 newly active tuberculosis cases and 8 303 deaths in the United States. Dr Robert J Anderson of New York the medical director of the National Tuberculosis Association commented by telecommunication on Ethambutol response.
Dr. Shirley Ferrebee cites optimism that a new tuberculosis drug will significantly improve outcomes for patients without prior treatment and those with resistant germs. The drug’s potential is to be outlined by the American Thoracic Society in January. Ferrebee notes the current standard is isoniazid plus PAS, but PAS causes gastrointestinal distress leading to poor tolerance.
