Goose Season Opens with Optimism at Mattamuskeet
The Mattamuskeet area reports a delayed migration and improved hunting prospects as geese linger on the lake. Officials note a 70,000 goose count and tighter limits, while veteran Axson Smith foresees a late but bountiful peak with more birds in late November and December.

Outdoor Scene deer hunt yields eighty on Uwharrie refuge
Oliver Thompson, refuge manager, reports eighty deer killed on the Uwharrie Wildlife Management Area this season. Bucks accounted for 67 during the two week gun season and 13 by bow hunters. Opening day brought 27 bucks, with the best first day total since the refuge opened ten years ago. Thompson notes deer spread across Montgomery, Stanly and parts of Randolph and Davidson counties and a growing herd in upper Richmond County. He cites diet and habitat as factors in rack size and predicts future improvements as herds balance with food. A bobcat was also taken this year.
