Guilford County Board of Education delays action on a resolution seeking county borrowing for land purchases as part of a four million dollar five year improvement plan. Supt E P Pearce notes urgent need for 50 acres for a northern high school site and 10 acres for Jamestown junior high, with 100000 for sites and 270000 for additions. Other actions include informal bids for Summit School land and special elections on joining city limits.

Integration of Schools Proposed in Guilford County

A four man delegation led by Robert County and the NAACP proposed immediate discontinuance of Brown Sumall high in the rural Guilford system and future schools should be accredited. They cite 500 Negro high school students, costly transportation, and unequal education quality as reasons and pledge cooperation to ensure every child gets the best education despite potential steps. Eight rural high schools are accredited but three predominately Negro schools are not. Citizens backed the bond issue, and officials warn unaccredited schools hinder access to higher learning and decent wages.
