Census Bureau data show 60,954,000 Americans held jobs in November, up 517,000 from October. Non farm employment rose to 51,540,000, nearly matching a 1949 high, while unemployment fell 167,000 to 3,409,000 as seasonal hiring effects inflated joblessness. The report notes October strikes and seasonal hiring shaped the figures.
MT VERNON WASH DEC 6 A grade school principal shot and killed his ex wife Betty Trout 27 and her fiance William O Loane 24 then fatally wounded himself in a bungalow they were preparing for their marriage. John W Trout 32 a Rockport grammar school principal also died. Police linked the shooting to Trout s failure to reconcile with his former wife divorced in 1948. The bodies were found by L F Buchanan a Mt Vernon real estate man and father of Mrs Trout. Her 3 year old son Terry was in the living room and heard Mommy go bang bang.
ADA director Charles La Follette پیشنهاد Byrnes take over leadership of the North South Conservative Coalition. Byrnes, a former South Carolina senator and secretary of state, has critiqued the Truman administration. La Follette wrote that many northern Republicans share southern Democratic liberal-conservative kinship and urged unity in a single-house alliance.

In Burlington a Lenoir mill camp incident left Willie E. Remines dead from knife wounds about 8:30 p.m. A James A. Wishon of Johnson City Tennessee, 21, was arrested at the scene and charged with murder. Remines is identified as the husband of Julia Church of Lenoir. his wife reportedly lives in Johnson City.
The local government commission sold 4 million dollars of Winston Salem water bonds at 1.8481 percent interest. The low bidder, J P Morgan and Company of New York, supplied bonds averaging 15 1/3 years to maturity.
AP analyst Dewitt Mackenzie reports Britain roars in anger over UN action to seek more information on non self governing territories. London opposes international interference with colonial prerogatives, though withdrawal from the UN is unlikely.
Presidential advisors converged in Key West to help Truman draft the state of the union and economic messages. Five aides listed by press secretary, with others arriving from Boca Chica, aboard USS Williamsburg and quarters L. Plans include repealing the Taft Hartley Act expanding social security Brannan farm plan national health program civil rights proposals and potential tax increases to cover a projected deficit.
Elizabeth Galloway a Wilmington mother of two died in a house fire and was charged with murder by a coroner's jury. Held for the grand jury under 4000 dollars bond after the verdict blamed gross negligence. Eleven witnesses testified she left the children alone the morning of the fire.
Piedmont Natural Gas Corp lists 17 North Carolina communities to be served including Charlotte and Concord with projected dwelling units by 1960. The firm opposes Commonwealth Natural Gas Corp in seeking Virginia power commission approval to deliver gas.
Robert R. Young head of the Chesapeake and Ohio railroad enters the soft coal dispute as a mediator. Albania said to the United States and Britain that it would seek help from Russia if a showdown with Greece occurred. Tirana radio accused Anglo American powers of helping Greece violate Albania’s frontier and use Greece to threaten the Soviet bloc. The broadcast framed Albania as part of the peace camp and an ally of the USSR.
Four voyage weary seamen were arrested after a shipboard brawl on the American freighter Nathaniel B Palmer in New York harbor near the Statue of Liberty. Captain Victor G Diaz tried to cuff a rebellious crewman. a gun discharged wounding radio officer William Belazanow. Belazanow, 23, of Lancaster Pa, defended the captain. The ship had just returned from Honolulu with a sugar cargo. Held on third degree assault charges were Charles Gillikin Vernon Porter John Harris and Ernest Caudle.
Five boys born to Maria Arroyave in Angostura are reported in good health. The quintuplets are named Fermin Ramiro Rodrigo Nabor and Francisco. Their father is Alfonso. The births were confirmed by telegram from the Angostura mayor.
New York stocks showed an even keel session with little pressure on either side. Small gains posted by Santa Fe Union Pacific American Smelting Kennecott Anaconda Copper Dow Chemical Westinghouse International Paper Johns Manville United Aircraft and occasional losses by Chrysler General Motors Goodrich American Can International Nickel Twentieth Century Fox Chesapeake and Ohio Sears Roebuck.
Li Tsung Jen arrived in Honolulu from Hong Kong aboard Pan American Airways seeking medical aid for a severe stomach ailment. He spoke through an interpreter and stated the visit's sole purpose was to obtain assistance.
A symposium by the North Carolina Association of CPAs and universities debated if charitable contributions for bond support can reduce taxable income.
