High Point District Wins Two Top Boy Scout Council Awards
The High Point district of the Uwharrie Boy Scout Council received the J. H. Millis award and the Organization and Extension award at the 32nd annual meeting in Thomasville. Clyde Hunt was elected council president for 1955, with Harriss Covington and others named to top posts. Silver Beaver honors went to J. E. Fisher and Grady Ward, and remarks by UNC graduate Ward highlighted the event attended by many council leaders.

A Raleigh breakfast honored Dr. Hugh T. Lefier and the late Mrs. Albert Newsome for North Carolina a history of the state. Ovid William Pierce of Weldon won the Sir Walter Raleigh Award for The Plantation. Dr Fletcher M Green was elected president of the State Literary and Historical Association. James York of Olin was re elected president of the North Carolina Folklore Society.

Three special prizes were drawn plus numerous free gifts as Temple Motor Co introduced the 1955 Mercury model Friday night. J W Daves won a 21 inch console TV, Mrs N A Davis took a wrist watch, and Hubert L Leonard claimed ten free lubrication jobs. C B Shackleford of High Point was hospitalized after a heart attack.
